Harvester, despite its length, never once impeded him. Scarcely had he settled when Dust landed once more on his shoulder.

Death nodded once to the crow, a second time to his mount. The horse broke into a gallop that should have been impossible on the soft and shifting surface. For the first time in five hundred years, the eldest of the Horsemen rode out into Creation to do the bidding of the Charred Council. Before them, the walls of reality parted, as ephemeral as cobweb and just as readily swept aside. The barren world on which Death had made his home fell away, less palpable than a forgotten dream, and they were elsewhere.

Or, more accurately, nowhere. Above and all around them were swirling currents of white. Not white mist, or cloud, or haze; just white. It just happened to be the presence of emptiness made manifest. The rolling whiteness around them muffled sound, offered little sensation of motion--but here, distance had no meaning anyway.

The journey from one reality to the next would take as long as it took, and not even Death truly knew why. The tedium afforded him the opportunity to think on what had happened. He could have gladly gone until the end of time without ever again hearing the name Eden. I even learned Death has a conscience and can feel guilty over certain matters! On top of it all the story has its funny moments. I caught myself chuckling and even laughing more than twice. I must admit I had little problem with the wording sometimes, but keep in mind that English is not my native language. If you never played the games you will feel quite lost or possibly bored.

Below are the three reasons I did not rate this book 5 stars: When it comes to the characters is really not bad. However the or-so pages describing battle and scenery can get pretty tiresome. To wrap things up, if you are a Darksiders fan give this book a try and take your own conclusions.

And to the game developers out there: Come on guys, bring us Darksiders 3 already! Kindle Edition Verified download. I am a huge fan of the Darksiders video games and general lore.

So, I'm coming into this book with a bit of a bias. I have to say, Ari Marmell did a fantastic job of weaving a story the fit perfectly within this world. One of the things I liked most about this book was the evocative wordsmithing that is prevalent throughout the book.

One of my all time favorite lines is the way Lillith's voice is described; as a sweet cream on the cusp of turning. I had to tell multiple people about it. I found this story engaging and interesting. Some things were a little predictable, but the end very fitting and enjoyable. For me, the reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is just because some of the word play actually made it difficult to read.

I often had to re-read sentences or paragraphs to make sure I had the intent correct.

    Darksiders. The abomination vault

All-in-all, I would absolutely recommend this book to a fan of the Darksiders games or of stories involving angels and demons. This is a great read, especially for fans of the Darksiders franchise. It expands on the lore of Darksiders through a narrative that happens before the main events of Darksiders.

It gives additional depth to the main characters and villains from Darksiders 1 and 2, exploring their past and their motivations in a way that is not only consistent with the storytelling of the game, but also in a fashion that, I believe, serves as the best interpretation and explanation for their characterisaton in the games. It is almost as though the storyline of the games are but subsequent chapters in the Darksiders story with this being the first.

After completing the game and reading this, many instances of dramatic irony for example in the relationships of the Angels are established that would have been missed without reading this book.

More than that, the original characters, such as the villains, introduced for this book that do not exist in the game also have a story that is crafted beautifully, with empathisable motivations that are weaved seamlessly in the overarching storyline.

Some minor characters in the games are given a more complex examination in this book which gives more sense to their abilities and actions in Darksiders. Aside from these, the book broadens the narrative grounds of the Darksiders franchise, creating new plot threads, pieces of lore, and ideas that would probably be used in further games of the series.

While being incredibly dark in both atmosphere, descriptions, and events that fits its genre of fiction based upon religious descriptions of realms beyond that of men, the book has many instances of witty humour as well especially around the interactions of Death, the eldest Horseman of the Apocalypse, due to his sarcasm and snide as is already evident to those who played Darksiders 2.

My only quibble with the story is that two of the Horsemen, Fury and Strife, were merely minor characters and had only a few lines worth of scenes. However, this is understandable given that it was released at the time when only Darksiders 1 and 2 were released, that were centred respectively around the other two Horsemen, War and Death.

Overall, it does an excellent job of strengthening the lore of the game series which it was based upon, which is the primary function of any gaming literature. As an independent story, it is also an excellent read, containing a wide array of brilliant aspects from moments of adrenaline to moralistic dilemmas reflecting those in human nature through supernatural entities to amazing plot twists.

While being a grim interpretation of the otherworldly realms beyond Earth and the horrors they contain, it also serves as a reminder that bright and simple characteristics-sacrifice, brotherhood, and strategic wit to name a few-are more than enough to overcome them. See all 79 reviews.
